Curriculum Intent

  • For our children to increase their activity levels in ways which are enjoyable and beneficial for health
  • Develop both physical and mental well-being
  • Experience different types of physical activity and learn associated skills
  • To participate in a range of sporting events - both competitive and for fun

Curriculum Implementation

Physical Education lessons at Castle include a range of individual disciplines such as dance and athletics, with team sports and games. Through these sports, children will have opportunities to learn the skills of both co-operation and competition.

During Key Stage 2, the range of games and sports taught are broader, and the children are inspired to compete in various local competitions. They will perform dances, take part in athletics and gymnastics, and attempt to achieve personal bests in a range of activities. In addition, all children have the opportunity to learn to swim.

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Curriculum Impact

The impact of the PE curriculum at Castle Primary School will ensure that children:

  • Take responsibility for their own health and fitness and many also enjoying the success of competitive sports
  • Will be inspired to have a love of sport and to grow up to have happy and healthy lives; utilising the skills and knowledge they have acquired through PE
  • Will be stewards of their own learning (both in and out of the classroom) and supporting their peers to develop and excel in sport and across the curriculum
  • Show a willingness and ability to try new sports and activities, push themselves and persevere in light of new challenges

Competition

The intent of Castle Primary School's participation in competition is for children to have fun, enjoyment, a positive experience and to develop their health and fitness.
