Art

Castle Primary school is committed to encouraging creativity through a wide variety of forms of expression. All children are encouraged to develop their artistic creativity, learn and acquire new skills and processes. They are given opportunities to explore a wide range of materials, tools and techniques in 2D, 3D and virtual form. Children explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers.

Design & Technology

Design technology is taught through our creative curriculum a Castle Primary. By linking design technology to the topic being taught in each classroom, children derive more meaning and purpose from their learning as it is set in a relevant context. Design technology is a practical and imaginative curriculum area where children frequently use higher level thinking skills to problem solve. Design technology as a curriculum area teaches direct making skills linked with the discipline of engineering (eg: strengthening, connecting, and building structures from different materials), but is also an amazing vehicle for bringing knowledge from other areas of the curriculum to life.

By following a model of design, make, evaluate, pupils demonstrate a wide range of technical knowledge that showcases their application of subject knowledge from other areas of the curriculum (eg: use mechanical and electrical systems in their products and apply their understanding of computing skills). The most important facet of design technology at Castle is that it is presented in an exciting and open-ended manner where children’s curiosity and questioning is nurtured.

Geography

In Geography, children at Castle learn about their local area and compare their life in this area with that in other regions. They will learn how to draw and interpret maps, whilst developing their skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem-solving.

Learners gain an appreciation of other cultures through our human geography lessons. Geography teaching will also motivate the children to find out about the physical world and the issues facing the world today, such as climate change and sustainability.

History

Our History lessons fire the children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. They play an essential part in preparing children for living and working in the contemporary world.

Pupils consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like, how these societies organised their politics, and what beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions. As they do this, children develop a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. They develop an understanding about themselves as individuals and members of society. What they learn can influence their decisions about personal choices, attitudes and values.

PE and Sport

Physical Education lessons at Castle include a range of individual disciplines such as dance and athletics, with team sports and games. Through these sports, children will have opportunities to learn the skills of both co-operation and competition.

During Key Stage 2, the range of games and sports taught are broader, and the children are inspired to compete in various local competitions. They will perform dances, take part in athletics and gymnastics, and attempt to achieve personal bests in a range of activities. In addition, all children learn to swim during their time at Castle.

Sessions are taught by 'Sports Coaching North West', as we feel that our children benefit greatly from quality, engaging lessons provided by specialist coaches. This creates a meaningful pathway for pupils to progress to a level that fulfils their potential.

Performing Arts – Music, Dance & Drama

We are immensely proud of the Performing Arts at Castle Primary School and the impact it has had on our school. It is this strength and the involvement of the whole school in developing our Performing Arts curriculum that has enabled us to involve every child in drama, music and dance. The Performing Arts plays a key role in our children’s personal development. The subjects of Music, Dance and Drama have provided all of our children with so many rich and varied opportunities to experience the arts, which develop creative, confident and capable students, who go out into the world and impress others with their abilities.

The lessons are taught by specialist teachers, some of whom have significant professional experience in the arts. We always strive to deliver to our students a varied arts curriculum including technical theatre, voice training, specialist dance and two school musicals a year.

Children also have opportunities to sing in the community, through visits to local care homes and participation in church services.

Religious Education

The role of Religious Education at Castle is to help prepare and equip all pupils for life and citizenship into today’s diverse and plural Britain, through fostering in each pupil an increasing level of religious awareness.

Pupils are given the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of beliefs, practices, spiritual insights and secular world views.

We use the Staffordshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.
